The United States adds another club to the Premier League takeover

After the purchase of Everton, more and more English football clubs are owned by American companies or owners.

The Premier League continues to expand internationally, with the United States one of its key markets and where more and more fans in North America are beginning to identify with English football teams.

The Friedkin Group announced on Thursday that it has bought 94% of Everton, joining a growing list of American owners in English football.

The arrival of the Friedkin Group in the Premier League increases the number of American-owned teams in the Premier League to ten, representing half of the league under American control, something that was practically unthinkable three decades ago when it was founded.

Furthermore, in the Championship, teams such as Leeds, owned San Francisco 49ers, Larry Nance Jr and Will Ferrell, among others, also have American ownership in their ranks, further increasing the North American presence in England.

Which Premier League clubs have American owners?

Chelsea

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital arrived at the London club a few years ago and since then the London team has made $661 million in profits, according to 2023 data from Sportico.

Arsenal

The owner of the Denver Nuggets has also had a stake in Arsenal since 2011, since that year he has been trying to build one of the most powerful teams in the Premier League, but he has yet to take that step, the value of 2023 in terms of the profits exceeded $600 million.

Liverpool

Fenway Sports Group came close to selling Liverpool, but the group that includes LeBron James remains at the helm of the Reds and has guided the Merseyside club to a profit of $766 million in the past year.

Manchester United

The Red Devils have undergone a major change of ownership as the Glazer family sold part of the team to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, sharing management of the club, which has made $836 million in profits over the past year.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa, owned by Wesley Edens since 2018, is also starting to achieve success and this is reflected on the pitch with the project led by Unai Emery. Outside of the on-field exploits, the team has generated $281 million in profits.

Bournemouth

Bill Foley arrived at Bournemouth a few years ago and was another example of sporting success. With Andoni Iraola as coach and a team that is regularly a sight to behold, the Cherries have increased their profits to $182 million in the past twelve months.

Crystal Palace

John Textor, Josh Harris and David Blitzer have been at Crystal Palace for more than a decade, but unlike other clubs, they have struggled to make a name for themselves in the sporting arena. Financially, however, the club is in a solid position and has generated over $200 million.

Fulham

The Cottagers have also created an interesting project, which took more than a decade to consolidate under Shahid Khan's leadership. Under Marco Da Silva, the side have made a huge impression in the Premier League this season, while raising a total of more than $200 million in economic terms.

Ipswich town

Finally, Ipswich Town, owned by ORG, BPSP and Avenue Sports, have achieved a lot in three years, including sealing an unlikely promotion to the Premier League by playing intense, reckless football. However, this past year it is the team that made the least profit at just $28 million.
