Marcus Rashford could hit a stumbling block in his bid to leave Manchester United next month as few European clubs can afford his huge salary demands.
Rashford shocked United this week by claiming he wants to end his long spell at Old Trafford after growing frustrated with his lack of opportunities and declining form.
The 27-year-old said he wanted a “new challenge” in an impressive interview after being dropped from United's matchday squad by boss Ruben Amorim for the 2-1 win over Manchester City.
Amorim wants Rashford to stay and urges him to take up the challenge to excel at United. The England star could be forced to end the season with the Red Devils after suffering a transfer setback.
The Telegraph has claimed that Rashford's £325,000-a-week contract and a deal running until 2028 will put off many clubs in January, with few teams able to afford his salary plus an expected price tag of £40 million.
It is further said that Rashford could struggle to attract offers even if United put him up for sale at a lower price. The Saudi Pro League are also interested in a move for him, but Rashford is reluctant to step outside top European football.
Rashford's best hope of leaving United next month is if a club agrees to loan him with an obligation to buy. However, it is unclear whether United would be willing to make such a deal.
Rashford is desperate to revive his England career after not playing for the Three Lions since March last year. A move away from United would boost his chances of doing so, with the player targeting an appearance at the 2026 World Cup.
In his interview this week, he emphasized his desire to leave but said there were no ill feelings towards United or Amorim, claiming he wanted to leave on good terms.
“Personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps. If I leave, it will be 'no hard feelings'. You won't get any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person.
“If I know a situation is already bad, I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen other players leave in the past and I don't want to be that person. If I leave, I will make sure an explanation and it will be mine.”
