Barcelona let a number of players leave during the 2024 summer transfer window, but one player who was forcibly taken was Marc Guiu. Chelsea withdrew his €6 million, and when he turned down a contract offer from the Catalans, he moved to the west London-based team.
Guiu has struggled for minutes in the Premier League but has flourished in the UEFA Conference League. He scored five in his last two league games, including a hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers.
After this performance, Chelsea hero Joe Cole spoke about Guiu, and also criticized Barcelona for allowing his departure to happen (via Diario AS).
“How did Barcelona let him go? This boy could be a consolidated number nine in two years. I think he can go far. Barcelona made a mistake.”
Guiu's situation marked the second time in two summers that Barcelona have let a talented youngster slip through their fingers, after Arnau Tenas left for Paris Saint-Germain in 2023. They must learn to prevent this from happening again in the future.
