AC Milan draw with Cagliari leaves Conceicao “angry”

Alvaro Morata struck for Milan before Nadir Zortea found the equalizer for the visitors.

“I expected much, much more in every area. Considering the quality of the squad I have, the first half was probably the worst I've had in my 13 years as a coach, to be honest,” Conceicao told Sky Italia.

“We lacked liveliness, the pace was too slow, Cagliari had everyone in the final third to defend their goal, that's their strategy, but we should have done what we prepared to find those spaces. We weren't smart enough to do that.

“The second half was better, we had 25 shots on target, Cagliari started wasting time. I realize that this is the strategy in Italy, that is not a problem, but the referee has to give more than five minutes of extra time.

“This is no excuse, and neither is the fatigue of the Supercoppa. We should have done more, but these are still factors that I cannot ignore.”

On the reasons for the setback, Conceicao added: “It's a little bit of everything. It's the mentality, the physique and a lot of work that we have to do to improve because there were spells in that game that I didn't like at all. A draw results in a loss of two points. I'm angry because we didn't do what we prepared, so we have to do a lot of work.

“We didn't have enough width and movement. Rafael Leao against two or three, he needs support and moves other than those that give him options. The same goes for Pulisic on the other side and the full-backs.”
