AC Milan are leading the race for Kyle Walker after he asked to leave Manchester City.
Walker, 34, who became City captain 18 months ago after turning down the chance to join Bayern Munich, is looking to take up an offer from abroad during the January transfer window after being made aware of the interest of the Italian team.
And while it is understood no formal offer has been made yet, Milan are believed to be confident they will soon secure a deal for the experienced England international – who still has 18 months left on his contract at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola confirmed Walker was ineligible for the Blues' 8-0 FA Cup tie against League Two Salford City after informing sporting director Txiki Begiristain of his desire to move. The City boss did not make it clear where Walker could move, with interest also coming from the Saudi Pro League.
Guardiola said: “It's not easy for me to say, but Kyle is not here because two days ago he asked to explore the possibility of playing abroad. He asked about the Treble, when Bayern wanted him, but the offer wasn't good enough.” That's why I prefer to play against other players whose minds are here.
“Kyle went to Txiki Begiristain. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty convinced that you shouldn't keep anyone who doesn't want to be here. Kyle asked to explore. That doesn't mean it's going to happen, you never know.
“I respect him a lot because I am more than grateful to him. He has been here for us for many years. He has been important for the national team, but he said: 'I want to explore it, in my mind and in my heart I want exploring.' .I don't know what's going to happen.”
Walker has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, the Club World Cup and the Champions League since joining City from Tottenham for £50 million in 2017.
