AC Milan hope to complete the signing of Manchester City's Kyle Walker on Friday after further talks.
Milan will wait to see if City will allow the 34-year-old to sign on a free transfer before making official contact and the Italians will offer him a two-and-a-half-year contract.
That deal will prevent Milan from signing another British player such as Marcus Rashford this season.
The Manchester United forward remains a target for Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona as Napoli consider an approach.
Milan have Chelsea's Joao Felix on a list of potential alternative targets.
Felix joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid for £42.7million in August, having previously spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Stamford Bridge.
However, he has only played three games in the Premier League under Enzo Maresca this season.
The Portuguese forward has instead been given opportunities in cup games and has seven goals to his name this season, but has still failed to consistently force his way into Maresca's starting XI.
Maresca has previously spoken about the difficulty he faces playing Felix and Cole Palmer together, and this tactical conundrum has limited Felix's minutes.
He could now look for more playing time elsewhere, with Milan becoming a possible next destination if they choose to pursue a deal.
