A former winner of the Africa Cup of Nations made Jamie Carragher's comments about the tournament in a targeted response to the former Liverpool defender.
Carragher, 47, landed in himself in hot water after he seemed to reject the idea that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is an important tournament.
Speaking at Sky Sports after Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, found the ex-Reds Center-back that Mohamed Salah played in Afcon against his business to be the best player in the world.
Carragher said: 'I think the problem is (is) the fact that he is with Egypt, and he probably doesn't play as such in the big tournament, or may have a big chance to win, I think it's the Champions League of The big tournament is.
Salah, 32, has never lifted the African continental title, but did twice in 2017 and 2021.
Now a former tournamenter has entered the controversy by saying that Carragher 'does not know what a big tournament is because he never won one'.
In a message on X, formerly Twitter, Ahmed Elmohamady was the newest person who made an exception to Carragher's comments.
He said: 'Jamie Carragher doesn't know what [a] A big tournament is because he never won one. Afcon is an important tournament. So proud to win it twice. '
Elmohady, a countryman of Salah, was part of the side of Egypt who won the tournament in both 2008 and 2010 and made 92 performances for his country between 2007 and 2019.
The Pharaohs are the most successful team in the history of the competition with an impressive seven titles and get the chance to win the competition for an eighth time at the end of 2025.
The comments from Elmohamady come after Carragher was also labeled as 'unforgettable ignorant' by former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys for trivializing the meaning of the tournament.
Writing in his blog post, Keys, 67, did not mention Carragher explicitly, but gave a clear reference to the debate on his comments.
Keys wrote: 'Let alone the best ever of the PL – Mo Salah is perhaps Liverpool's best ever – despite the fact that he never played in a big tournament. Serious. Some ignorance. Unforgivable ignorance '.
'Time and again referred to the arrogance of so -called experts who live and work within the boundaries of the UK who do not think above their territory.
'That is why our toilet here in Qatar was rejected by so many of them – even though it is the best ever – a climax with the best football matches I've ever seen. “Qatar? “They asked. “” Not England? Why? How could that happen? '' '
'I'm a bit off the course, so let me correct that. In a Stat-based world there is someone to think about. At Beinsport alone in Egypt, we probably had more than 100 million people who watched the confrontation of the Egyptian kings on Sunday. And that number does not take into account the 22 other countries on our territory.
'Yes. Egypt, which is the most successful team in the history of Afcon, has won seven times. Salah hasn't won it yet – but he still gets a chance against the end of the year. Still – it's not one of the big tournaments, right? It is not played in England – or Europe, so that is not possible. '
