Liverpool's backline was pierced by Lisandro Martínez to become the first player since the Jose Mourinho era to score for their north-west rivals.
Six years after the last Manchester United goal at Anfield, Lisandro Martínez fired the Red Devils into a shock lead on Merseyside.
Little was expected from Ruben Amorim's floundering United side before kick-off, but they showed impressive resilience in the first half and came close to opening the scoring through Rasmus Hojlund. The scores remained level at half-time, but the visitors found a breakthrough just a few minutes into the second half.
Lisandro Martínez stormed onto the pitch to pressure Liverpool's midfield, helping his team regain possession and continuing their run forward. After a neat touch from Bruno Fernandez on the edge of the Liverpool box, Martínez found himself one-on-one and fired the ball into the top corner.
Martínez's goal was the first for a Manchester United player at Anfield since December 2018, when José Mourinho's side lost 3-1. Jesse Lingard was on the scoresheet that day, playing alongside Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in the United team. Lingard currently plays for FC Seoul in K League 1.
United's joy was short-lived after Martínez's superbly taken opener. Just minutes later, Cody Gakpo skipped past Matthijs de Ligt and curled a goal into the top corner, setting up a tense final 30 minutes on Merseyside.
