The news that Trent Alexander-Arnold will join Real Madrid after he has not succeeded in being a new contract with Liverpool, has turned Reds fans upside down, and Alan Shearer has now had his say
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has claimed that the reaction of some Liverpool fans to the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is ready to become a member of Real Madrid has “irritated” him. Although there has been no concrete announcement of the Liverpool star or its potential new club, the news broke on Tuesday that the full-back was in advanced negotiations to move to the Spanish capital about a free transfer in the summer.
The 20-year-old association of Alexander-Arnold with the Reds now seems to be probably being broken at the end of the season, because he will take on an extension in the last few months of his contract in Anfield.
The news is usually met with anger and disappointment of some Liverpool supporters, who will undoubtedly be discouraged to see a Premier League and Champions League-winning Academy product leave the club. Yet Shearer believes that the vice-captain of the Reds deserves a respectful broadcast if he left the club, and that some answers have rubbed him in the wrong way.
“It's not really a surprise because there is so much talk about Trent and Real Madrid, but I just look at some comments, and often not because it doesn't annoy me,” Shearer told Betfair.
“But when I looked at a few reactions on Tuesday when the news broke out, I know it is his club, but he has been brilliant for Liverpool, played a major role in everything they have done in recent years and he won every trophy with them.
“He has been a main player and played a little less than 400 games, has been enormously successful and given everything to that football club.
“Trent should be allowed to make the decision to say yes, he wants to try something new, go to another country for one of, if not the biggest club in the world in real Madrid and he should receive a great broadcast from the fans of Liverpool when it happens.
“There has been no opportunity in which you can question his attitude, he has always given everything and he tried to do it in the right way. He is not involved in all the talk.”
Although the head-believers will be concerned about losing a player of the caliber of Alexander-Arnold, especially with the contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who also swings on Merseyside, Shearer has sustained that the side of Arne Slot will always recover after they have gone after club legends.
“Look at the wonderful players they have always had replaced,” he said. “For a great midfielder in Graeme Souness, you get Steven Gerrard.
“Liverpool will continue, still be a great football club and will still win piles of trophies – there is no doubt about that, but it is what it is and Trent can say that he wants to try to taste something else in another country.
“Trent leaves a huge powerhouse of a football club and joins another in Real Madrid. For him to try something else in a new country, he is after everything he has done for Liverpool. I just think that should be respected.”
