Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Liverpool’s EFL Cup final

Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the EFL Cup Final of Liverpool against Newcastle United with an ankle injury, but can return before the end of the season.

Alexander-Arnold stumbled in the second half of the loss of Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday, where the Reds eventually went on punishments.

Jarell Quansah, who was mentioned on Friday in Thomas Tuchel's first English team, replaced him in the Parc des Princes and could start at Wembley on Sunday.

Alexander-Arnold's injury, however, leaves Liverpool without a recognized middle behind, because Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are still recovering problems.

“Trent is not available”, head coach Arne Slot confirmed in a news conference on Friday.

“He will not be there at the final. He still has to be assessed how long it will take, but we expect him before the end of the season.”

Alexander-Arnold is one of the three Liverpool players who are out of contract at the end of this season, together with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian reached new heights in 2024-25; He has 44 Premier League target involvement this period (27 goals, 17 assists), the joint one ever recorded by a player in a 38-game campaign.

In the meantime, Van Dijk has played every minute of the Premier League this season (2,610), the only player in the team who does this.

After Liverpool's defeat, Van Dijk admitted that he did not know if he would be in the club next season, but Slot insisted that he would continue to plan for next season with the 33-year-old in mind.

“The only thing I know is that I want Virgil here next season, and the rest is about contracts and that is not what I do here,” he said.

“It doesn't work [affect planning]Not for me. “

Liverpool participates in their 15th EFL Cup final, five more than any other side, while they have won the trophy 10 times, two more than anyone else.

The Reds have won 18 domestic English cup trophies (10 EFL cups, eight FA cups) and can be the same as the Mancester United Trek of 19 if they overcome in this competition, with the Red Devils win 13 FA Cups and six ELL cups.

Slot takes the lead for his first final with Liverpool, but expects a tough test from Newcastle on Sunday.

“We are really looking forward to playing in a final again, because you cannot take a final final, especially not in this country with so many good teams involved in every cup competition,” he added.

“We look forward to being part of it and if you are part of it, you naturally want to try to win it, but that is of course also what Newcastle wants.”
