Alexander Volkanovski thinks Ilia Topuria could beat Islam Makhachev
Alexander Volkanovski knows Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria as the back of his hand, after having shared the cage with both.
In his first attempt at Russian, the featherweight icon was painfully close to claiming the lightweight title. Unfortunately, in the Rematch, he was done with a brutal headkick.
He did not even come close to 'El Matador', with the Spanish-Georgian brutally made him unconscious with a thunderous combination.
Now the 28-year-old has decided to go on a division, which opened the door for Volkanovski to compete for the empty title against Diego Lopes on UFC 313.
Anyway, keeping his experiences with both former opponents, while the former 145 pound King is more than aware of how great Makhachev is, he still thinks that Topuria has a very good chance of sleeping the UFC-Pond-for-Pond number one.
In an interview with Daniel Cormier, he explained: “It's simple – Ilia is so dangerous. The only way I see Islam losing is to catch him. In the same way with myself. But who has the best chance of doing that? Someone like Ilia. It's definitely a nice fight.
“I think if it's 25 minutes, it's all Islam. But there is a good chance that Ilia can catch him because he clearly has that very neat boxing.
“Those earlier rounds, I think his Takedown defense could help him a little … But those later rounds, which I thought he would struggle with Max, but he could turn it off earlier, would be the same with Islam.”
