Alisson tells Liverpool team-mates how they can be even better despite fantastic start

Alisson admits Liverpool never expected to be in such a strong position midway through the season, but insists they can still improve.

Liverpool are clearly at the top of the Premier League – with a game in hand against their chasing rivals – and no one tipped them for this when Jurgen Klopp left in the summer. Alisson is pleased that they have won 22 of their 26 matches and lost just once, and insists they must keep striving.

Liverpool play West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday and Alisson says they have to believe they can still improve. “I think if we had looked at this point at the start of the season and were told the numbers, the number of points we would have, where we would be, we would have signed up for it immediately.” he said.

“We are happy with our position, but the best thing is that we can still improve in some areas. That means we can become a better team, solid and more consistent.

“We create a lot, especially defensively, we play so well. So we also have to look at the good sides and be happy with what we have done so far.”

Slot has had a record-breaking start to his Liverpool career and Alisson says he has confused critics who felt he would struggle to replace Klopp. “I think when Arne came to the club, everyone thought it would be a tough job for him to replace a manager like Jurgen,” said the Brazilian goalkeeper.

“But he shows his qualities and he brings us a lot of good things. I think it's not just one key, but many things that help us achieve our goals.

“I want to underline the dedication of this team, to do what the manager asks, to train hard every day. The players have the desire to improve, be a better team and win big things for this club. That is always important for a team that wants to win.”

Alisson echoed Slot's mantra when he said it is far too early to talk about titles when there is still so much football to be played. He thinks of last season, when Liverpool saw their quadruple hopes fade in just a few spring weeks due to a crippling injury list.

“It's too early to talk about the title, but it's our goal, it's our goal,” he said. “At the moment we can't look at the points and see how things are going. We really need to focus on the next opponent we have in front of us.

“That's the mentality we need and that's the mentality we have at the moment. We know how the Premier League can change so quickly in two games. Two games ago everyone was saying that Chelsea are getting closer, and all the teams are getting closer.

“Now, two games later, we are in a better position. Because of all the experience we have, it is good to think about the good and the bad things.

“The good and the bad moments will teach you. I think the bad moments teach you a lot, so yes, we can learn a lot of lessons from last season.

“But we are also in a different moment now. You can see that all the players are fully committed, everyone is fit, we have a few players injured, but everyone who can play, who is not injured, is really fit, is very good, is in very good shape.

“You don't just win matches on match day, you win matches before that, by preparing yourself, by putting yourself in the best shape possible. History has also taught us that.”
