Alonso: Today is the right time to announce departure; Proud of what we achieved

In anticipation of Bayer Leverkusen's home game against Borussia Dortmund, Xabi Alonso confirmed in a press conference that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

At his future

“The club and I have reached an agreement – this will be my last two games with the team. We believe that this is the right time to separate, and today is the right time to make this decision public. We have maintained good communication with the club everywhere.”

“The first season was the most complex, the second was historic, and this brought the most challenges. We were the defending champion and played in the Champions League. Although it was difficult, I learned a lot and gone through enormous growth.”

Plans for the future

“This is not the time to talk about what the next step is, because we want to have a nice farewell on Sunday. It is a moment full of emotions. We walked on the right way together these years, and there are two very exciting matches left.”

“Football and life are both about finding the right moment. That's how I see it. We hope that this farewell will reflect that, especially in view of the long, beautiful and important time we have spent here. I want to enjoy every last moment.”

Have you informed the players?

“I spoke with the players and employees, and with everyone who has been with us during this unforgettable for three years. Now it's time to share this moment with the fans in the stadium that made me today. I am very grateful and we can all be proud of what we have achieved.”

Next club?

“I'm not going to talk about that now. We still have a few games to play, the season is not over yet. That conversation will come afterwards. Timing is everything in football – the right time to change is the hardest part. Last year I thought I should continue this year.”

Expectations for Sunday's game

“Now it's time to share the moment with the fans, in this stadium that brought me so many emotions and has helped who I am. Let's enjoy it together.”

About reports that Wirtz wants to become a member of Bayern

“He didn't tell me anything. That is not information I have.”

Do you have an American visa (to attend the Club World Cup)?

“I don't know (laughs).”

On his relationship with the club and fans

“We have always had a strong bond. They have supported us and helped us enormously. I can only express my gratitude and respect. The DFB-Pokal final will be the most emotional moment.”

“The last week of last season was incredibly intense. At one point I knew that we would win the Bundesliga. After the bitter defeat in Dublin (Europa League final against Atalanta), I wanted to end up in the best possible way this season.”

“In the end we succeeded and finishing a historic season with the Domestic Double. It is the perfect way to end a dream year, and I believe it will be remembered for a long time.”

On the future of Leverkusen

“I have no doubt about the direction of the club. Leverkusen is at an extraordinary moment. I am happy that I have been part of it. It has been an important cycle with the players. At one point it has to end, and it is best to end it at a high rather than in bad times – that makes it easier for everyone.”

Do you want to take players with you?

“I can't promise that I don't bring a Leverkusen player in the next phase of my coaching career (laughs).”
