Alvarez hails ‘historic’ win after Argentina hammer Brazil

Julian Alvarez was happy to be eligible on Tuesday on Tuesday.

Alvarez opened the score in the fourth minute in Buenos Aires and the game later became a routine when the home team celebrated the qualification for the World Cup 2026.

Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Giuliano Simeone also found the net, with Matheus Cunha a goal for the Selecao.

“We have humbly done our work and played a great game. We gave them a show,” said Alvarez.

“It was a historical result that won 4-1, and that makes us really proud, I am so happy for the fans, to help the team and to see how we played an impressive game at home.

“It's great to know that we are qualified for the World Cup.”

Argentina had already qualified for the World Cup prior to this match, after Uruguay Bolivia had previously held a scoreless draw, which means that they could not fall under the sixth in the Conmebol qualification table.

Regardless of nothing to play for, Argentina has done a striking performance in a statement victory.

The victory marked the first time that Argentina has twisted double over Brazil in the qualification of World Cup, while it was their first home victory on their rivals since their qualifying campaign for the World Cup 2006.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni, who was without both Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez, was happy with the adaptability of his team and the ability to work for each other on the field.

“This is a team victory. We played as a team, and that's why we were able to minimize Brazil,” Scaloni said at his press conference after the game.

“I really don't know if it's our biggest victory, we played great games and do great things.

“A team needs to know what to do in different situations, and tonight the boys were doing great.”

Defending champion Argentina are the fourth team, apart from the three co-hosts (Mexico, Canada and the United States) to qualify for the World Cup 2026, in addition to Japan, Iran and New Zealand.
