Real Madrid has passed the quarterfinals of the Champions League with victory over Atletico Madrid, but there was a considerable controversy around the penalty shoot-out who decided that the round of 16 draw, which Los Blancos came up as 4-2 winners after Spot-Kicks in the Metropolitano.
Conor Gallagher scored the only goal of the game in 120 minutes, and because that made the total to 2-2, this meant that punishments would be necessary to decide which team would endure the last eight to tackle Arsenal. It was Real Madrid that this succeeded in doing this while winning a new shoot-out in the knockout phases, but Atleti feel hurt about the way the defeat.
With the penalty shoot-out on 2-1 after Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham scored for Real Madrid, and Alexander Sorloth for Atleti, Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the second effort of the hosts. He scored, but he was judged to have hit the ball with his standing foot before he shot in the roof of the net. After a VAR check, the successful strike became void, which meant that Los Blancos had the advantage – and it was one that they did not give up, despite a Miss from Lucas Vazquez.
Atleti produced an excellent performance in the night to take on the draw, although they will have the feeling that they would have had to win it before the shoot-out was needed, and Real Madrid Wee for the picking up. In the end it is again a disappointment for Los Colchoneros against their bitter rivals in the Champions League.
Real Madrid can now look forward to Arsenal in the next round, but for Atleti they now have to concentrate on La Liga and the Copa del Rey. In both games they then play Barcelona, where the competition match takes place in the Metropolitano on Sunday.
