Amorim adamant Arteta wouldn’t get time to transform things if he was at MU
RUBEN AMORIM doubts Mikel Arteta would have been given the same time to succeed at Manchester United as he was given at Arsenal.
Arteta won the 2020 FA Cup in his first season in charge but the Spaniard, who celebrates his FIFTH anniversary as Gunners boss this month, has yet to bring any new trophies to the Emirates.
No United manager has lasted more than three years at Old Trafford since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
New Red Devils chief Amorim, who takes United to second-placed Arsenal on Wednesday, said: “It's always important for a coach to have that confidence, but we have to recognize that Manchester United are a little bit different.
'All the attention you put into this all the time. So I know sometimes it's not possible to have all that time.
“So we'll try to get that done and try to do things a little bit faster, knowing that there's massive attention and massive judgment here every day.”
Amorim is full of praise for the work Arteta has done during his tenure with the Gunners.
Arteta took over in December 2019 but has had highs and lows, including losing six of 11 games and topping the Champions League places against arch-rivals Tottenham.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag, says he hopes to have the same presence of mind as Arteta in the tough times at Old Trafford.
He said: “He has done a fantastic job. Sometimes coaches are only judged by their titles, but I think what he did at Arsenal is fantastic. It has transformed the team.
“He bought a number of youngsters who are now the great talents of this country.
“I hope to have the same mentality as him in the difficult moments, because I have followed the Premier League for a long time.
“It's a very good quality for Mikel, so I think he did a great job.”
United left-back Luke Shaw will not face Arsenal after making an emotional statement last night revealing a new muscle injury.
The England defender, 29, has suffered terrible fitness problems since February.
He missed the final three months of last season due to a calf problem, but played for England in the latter stages of the European Championship.
He then suffered a repeat in pre-season but returned for three appearances under new boss Amorim before suffering his latest setback.
Heartbroken Shaw, who is expected to be out for several weeks, posted on Instagram: “It hurts a lot to have to write this as I really thought I had gotten through my recent struggles, but unfortunately I have suffered a setback.
“This has definitely been my toughest period. I am absolutely devastated and it is extremely difficult to face the reality at the moment.
“I understand that there will be people frustrated, angry and disappointed. No one feels that more than me.
“But what I can promise is that I will do everything I can to bounce back quickly and help this club realize its ambitions this season.”
