Amorim confirms final decision on Harry Maguire’s Manchester United future

Ex-Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will remain at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim has confirmed.

The central defender, who joined from Leicester for 80 million euros in 2019, only has six months left on his current contract. He is free to open talks with clubs abroad and would leave for nothing this summer without extended terms.

United retained an option to extend Maguire's deal for a further year. And boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed this option has been exercised, with Amad also closing in on a new deal.

Amorim said in his press conference ahead of this weekend's match with Liverpool: “Amad is close, Harry Maguire, we are going to activate our option.

“I spoke to him [Harry] this morning and I told him that he has to improve on the field, we need him badly. He also needs to improve as a leader. We all know the situation he had here, but we really need him right now, so we're going to activate the option for him, thankfully.

Asked whether Maguire can still be an important player, Amorim added: “If you look at our team, we are hungry for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”

Maguire, 31, has made more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils since joining from Leicester, including starting in each of the last four league games. He was appointed captain of the club in 2020, but the armband was stripped from him by Erik ten Hag.

The former Sheffield United and Hull player was on the verge of leaving in the summer of 2023. West Ham had agreed a fee for him of around £30 million, but the deal ultimately fell through due to Maguire's desire to fight for his place at Old Trafford.

Maguire has won the League Cup and FA Cup during his time as a Man United player. He will be hoping to secure a place in the club's starting line-up on Sunday when they take on fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Without Amad and Maguire, United have a host of other players in the final six months of their contracts. Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton and Christian Eriksen could all leave in the summer.
