The defeat of Manchester United against Tottenham in the Europa League final will have a huge impact on the company that they can do in this summer's crucial transfer window
Ruben Amorim has revealed that Manchester United was planned for life without the Champions League while entering the summer transfer window. United lost the Europa League final of Tottenham on Wednesday.
Since they are in 16th place in the Premier League, 27 points on drift of the top five, the final in Bilbao was their last chance to be eligible for the most important competition in Europe. The first half of Brennan Johnson was enough to condemn them to beat.
United had built up a large squadevision in this summer's transfer star. Controversial boss Amorim had hoped to bring in a number of players who may have helped him to reverse his reign.
But missing a lucrative place in the Champions League means that United's transfer plans must be changed. The Red Devils had closed the £ 62.5 million of Matheus Cunha and a relocation of £ 40 million for Liam Delap.
There are now doubts about whether United can afford it to actually act about those deals. But Amorim has now insisted that club leaders had already prepared for this scenario.
“We have two plans for the market and we have to understand that it is difficult for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” he said. “But we have to use the other side. We have more time to work on the Premier League during the week and that will be our focus.”
“It's in the future, I'm not going to talk about the future. This loss, the pain of losing this competition. I can see that it was clear, we were the better team, but then we managed not to score again.
“It is very difficult to win football matches, but the boys have tried everything to win the game. In the future we will have time to judge everything. I think I was always very honest with you. We did not perform perfectly today.
“But we were better than the opponent, and the opponent also played. In the second half we try everything – with the central defenders, with the players wide, cross in the box.
“I think I am really honest with you, so I expect the same and there are a few days that I said we were really poor. I think it wasn't the day today. We were not perfect. We have much to improve, but I am always honest with you.”
Missing the Champions League probably spells the end of United's striving for Tyler Dibbling. The 19-year-old had emerged as a target for the Red Devils who were impressed by Southampton, despite their terrible season.
Saints requires £ 100 million for their wonder kid. Last month it was reported that if United missed the Champions League and the corresponding £ 80 million in prize money, a movement for Dibling would be put in the background.
Instead, it was claimed that Amorim would give priority to the signing of a Center-Forward and an attacking midfielder as part of his plan B. It is a plan that must now be activated.
