Manchester United left back Nuno Mendes has no plans to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
Mendes, who worked with United boss Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, has been on PSG's books since the summer of 2022. However, his current contract expires at the end of next season and the French club could be tempted to cash in if a suitable deal materialises. offer comes.
Amorim has struggled at Old Trafford after replacing Erik ten Hag in the dugout. After picking up seven points from his first five games in charge, the former Sporting boss has overseen three straight defeats without his team scoring a single goal.
The suitability of United's players for his favored 3-4-3 formation has been increased, with Diogo Dalot regularly filling in on the left. Mendes is one of a number of left-wing pundits who have been linked, along with Alphonso Davies and Theo Hernandez, and new developments could give Amorim encouragement.
According to Sky Germany, Mendes is considering his options after deciding an extension from PSG is not a priority. The 22-year-old will not rush into a decision but United are said to be closely monitoring his situation.
Mendes was a week shy of his 18th birthday when Amorim presented him with his senior bow in Lisbon. He became one of Sporting's youngest ever goalscorers when he scored against Portimonense at the age of 18 and three months, with former United star Cristiano Ronaldo and current winger Geovany Quenda among the handful of stars who could improve that record.
He has been in and out of Luis Enrique's starting line-up at PSG this season, scoring once in nine games in Ligue 1. He has also played a key role in both of his side's Champions League victories, being the own goal winner against Girona created and scored in a 3-0 win against Red Bull Salzburg.
Amorim has not yet received his first United signing, but expressed in January that he hopes for new signings. “I'll keep that to myself,” he said when asked which positions were a priority. “But we will try to do something.”
United have confirmed that an extension has been activated for Harry Maguire, whose contract was due to expire this summer. Amad is also close to a new deal, but more ins and outs could follow.
“If the window is open, we can try to do something and we will try to do something,” Amorim told reporters ahead of Sunday's visit to Liverpool. “But I think in the coming weeks we will have more time to train and we can improve, that is the only way.
“We have played many matches without training, now we have more room to grow. You can see that the context is worse at the moment because we have suffered many losses, so we have to keep everything under control.”
