Manchester United could sign AC Milan star Theo Hernandez for just over £40million after the Italian side decided to reduce their asking price.
The Red Devils have put a new left back at the top of their shopping list under Ruben Amorim. United already have two left wing-backs in their ranks, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, but the pair's fitness issues have them looking for a more reliable option.
Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies was being considered. But a deal was seen as difficult due to interest from Real Madrid, with the Canadian now on the verge of signing a new deal with the German giants.
Another option could be Theo Hernandez of AC Milan. He is seen as an ideal candidate for new boss Amorim's 3-4-3 system.
The French left back has just eighteen months left on his own contract with his current employers. The Italian giants were keen to tie Hernandez to an extended deal and even demanded €80 million for his signature.
But their asking price has now dropped significantly, which could open the door to a possible move to Old Trafford in the near future. According to CalcioMercato, Milan have now reportedly received offers of around €50 million (£41.3 million) to sell the defender.
Milan technical director Geoffrey Moncada recently began talks with Hernandez, as well as goalkeeper Mike Maignan – the pair's contracts expire in 2026. He said: “We started negotiations two months ago and we can say that things are going very well go.
“I don't know who will sign first, but we have started very well. Obviously everyone is happy, I haven't seen anyone wanting to leave. You can ask them, they are all happy here in Milan.”
Asked if Hernandez could be a future AC Milan captain, Moncada added: “He will be. Even he doesn't realize the potential he has. Nobody has a left back like that. I think he has a great career ahead of him, don't forget he is still young.”
Hernandez, 27, has been at San Siro since joining from Real Madrid in 2019. Since then he has played 230 games, scoring 31 goals and providing 41 assists.
The 36-time France international helped the side to the 2022 Serie A crown. His next appearance is likely to come on Wednesday evening when Milan take on Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League.
