Amorim makes Gyokeres transfer demand to Jim Ratcliffe amid Man Utd woes

Manchester United WILL attempt to sign Viktor Gyokeres this month in a bid to save their season.

Ruben Amorim always had plans to take 26-year-old Gyokeres to Old Trafford after leaving his role at Sporting Lisbon in November, although that transfer was planned for next summer and not January.

But The Star reports that those plans have changed, with Amorim telling Manchester United's hierarchy that they cannot afford to wait until the end of the season to land the Sweden international.

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford could leave the club this month, with the latter ready for a new challenge. Zirzkee also has suitors in Italy after a difficult start to his United career.

It would likely cost around £80 million to sign Gyokeres from Sporting in January due to a release clause in his contract. And while United could raise money from player sales in the winter window, any deal for the former Coventry City man would have to be approved by the Glazers.

It is thought Sporting would demand the full amount of his release clause if they parted ways with Gyokeres mid-season, amid suggestions he could leave for a slightly lower fee next summer.

Amorim and Gyokeres had a good working relationship at Sporting, where Gyokeres became one of Europe's deadliest strikers under the Portuguese coach.

After his move to United was announced in November, Amorim played down rumors of a move to Gyokeres in January. But with United struggling and among the Premier League's lowest scorers, he has been forced into a turnaround.

Gyokeres was also asked about a possible move to Manchester United shortly after Amorim's departure and said: “Are you going with Amorim to Man United? I don't know, I'm here. I really enjoy being here, it's not something I think about.

“I like it here. I'm sad he's leaving. We wish him all the best.”
