Amorim makes Man Utd transfer priority clear after star deemed not good enough

Ruben Amorim is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana at Manchester United.

The goalkeeper is in his second season at Old Trafford and is the clear number 1, despite some high-profile mistakes. The new manager now wants a shot-stopper who can push the Cameroonian, with Altay Bayindir not considered credible competition.

The Turk joined United from Fenerbahce for £4.3m in 2023 but has made just four appearances for the club, all of which have come in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He recently scored four in the defeat at Tottenham, conceding straight from a corner.

Bayindir would have to leave this month if United were to sign an immediate replacement, the MEN report. Tom Heaton turns 39 in April and his contract expires in the summer. Funds are tight in Manchester this month, so Amorim will have to be smart about his business if he can identify a target.

Onana has silenced his critics, but the numbers are not pleasant to read for the former Inter Milan goalkeeper, who was signed as a replacement for David de Gea. However, the jury is still out on whether the club has upgraded.

Onana has conceded 26 goals in 19 Premier League games this season and recently made a number of glaring mistakes that cost him his way against Nottingham Forest and Wolves. He was also beaten directly from a corner by Matheus Cunha on Boxing Day.

The goalkeeper was recently told by former United shot-stopper Massimo Taibi, responsible for one of Old Trafford's most high-profile errors, that he should consider seeking pastures new if his performance levels do not improve by the summer.

He told The Sun: “I would cut straight to the chase and say to him, 'Andre, you are one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but in the Premier League you are underperforming.' Block criticism, do some research, hit reset and go again. And if things don't change in June, move on'.

“I think subconsciously the United environment is not ideal for him and if a marriage shows cracks there is no point in continuing. Sometimes things don't work in a team and it's best to go our separate ways, which wouldn't be a failure.
