Amorim: Man United title talk is ‘crazy’

Ruben Amorim says it would be “crazy” to consider Manchester United as candidates to challenge the Premier League title next season.

United is 13th in the Premier League after a 13th defeat of the season in Tuesday's game against Nottingham Forest.

That is just one of the record number of losing the Red Devils in one campaign in the competition, which takes place in 2023-24 under Erik ten Hag.

With United 36 points behind leaders Liverpool with eight games to go, Amorim is realistic about where his side is currently.

Amorim said at a news conference prior to Sunday's derby with Manchester City: “We do many things.

“We set some standards, and sometimes we change players so that they have to adapt to our new standards.

“I know it is difficult to do that in just one year. I am not saying that we will win the title next year, I am not crazy.

“We suffer a lot, next year, a lot better and that is our goal.”

Earlier this year, reports suggested that United Chiefs, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have set the goal of winning their next title by 2028.

That gives Amorim three years to bring his side back to the top of the stack, but he says he can't think so far ahead.

“I know that in the coming year or two years we will not be the biggest competition,” he said. “I know we have to do a lot of things.

“We are in a hurry. What I don't want to think is that we need many years to be competitive. I can't think so. I can't manage that. It is not.

“Not only Man City but other teams. They are already in a place where we need a lot to catch them. They will certainly improve again next season.”

United has to win all eight of their remaining league matches to prevent them from registering their lowest points in a Premier League season.

After a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, Amorim has repeated that he would be happy to be supported in terms of new signing sessions prior to his first full campaign that was in charge.

“I just want to concentrate on our strengths and then try to use our club to try one or two players, big players,” he said.

“Although sometimes big players are different for you for you [the media]. “

Amorim also confirmed that Matthijs de Ligt will be assessed after maintaining a knock against forest, while he is hopeful that Kobbie Mainoo will be ready.
