Ruben Amorim says he understands why Al-Hilal Bruno wants to sign Fernandes, but is determined to hold his captain of Manchester United.
The Saudi Pro League club is willing to break the British transfer record to buy Fernandes this summer and pay him around £ 200 million about a three -year contract after conversations with his camp.
But Amorim knows how important the 30-year-old is for United's plans after seeing his Portuguese countryman 19 goals and 18 assists contribute this season and does not intend to have Fernandes leave in the summer.
“I think it is easy to understand (his interest), not only because of the figures, but also the way he plays, the importance he has here for five years,” Amorim said.
“He is a top player and we need top players. He is a leader, he is the captain, so he is really important. It is normal for many clubs to want a player like Bruno, such as (Alejandro) Garnacho, like others. But we want to keep the best players, and Bruno is clearly one of the top players in the world, so our idea has not changed. We want Bruno here. '
While Amorim offers to lead United to the Europa League final, while on Thursday evening they defend a 3-0 lead on the first legs against Athletic Bilbao, he was asked about a remark in January when he claimed that his team was probably one of the worst in the history of the club.
“I think you should see the quote right now,” he said. 'So things can change for me, and if you look at the Premier League, I think we are the worst teams in terms of results.
'At the end of the season we can be the worst team in PL history with a European title. We know that this season was really disappointing for everyone. I felt that and the feeling that this season was still the worst, I don't say in history, but I don't know in the last 50 years. '
Amorim was also asked about the claims of Arsene Wener on the weekend that the Europa League winners should return to the competition instead of getting an automatic qualification for the Champions League the following season.
He added: 'I just know the rules. If people want to change the rules with all means, but these are the rules. If you win the Europa League, go to the Champions League.
'I know that the Champions League should be for teams that are champions, or the best team in the competition, but they think this way to promote the (Europa League) competition. We cannot go through the Premier League. We follow the rules and go through the Champions League. '
