Ruben Amorim said he was “really angry” as he left Anfield with just a point following Manchester United's 2-2 draw at Liverpool, while captain Bruno Fernandes questioned why the team cannot produce such performances every week.
Lisandro Martinez fired United ahead early in the second half before Cody Gakpo's equalizer was followed by a penalty from Mohamed Salah that appeared to have given leaders Liverpool victory.
But Amad Diallo went home to earn a point at United. However, when asked if it was a step in the right direction, Amorim could not hide his disappointment at not winning at Anfield.
“Yes, because the expectations were so very different from what we saw during the match,” Amorim told Sky Sports.
“I think the other games make me angrier, so it's even harder to understand some things.”
Telling him that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had expressed similar frustrations over the team's inability to consistently deliver performances like those shown at Anfield, Amorim said: “This isn't about the system, it's not about the technique. It's about something else and this is difficult to understand, even for the coach.
“I think it was a deserved point, but it's only one point and I think we should be angry and disappointed, more than recently (in the defeats against) Newcastle, Bournemouth, Nottingham (Forest) – more than those days, today we must be really disappointed.
“If we play Liverpool every day, we will. So we have to do it against every opponent and understand that we have to fight very hard to get out of this situation.”
“The way we were really competitive is crucial for the future.
“I'm happy with the performance, not happy with the result, but I'm really angry because of the other games.”
When asked if he had conveyed that to his players, Amorim said: “No, because I have to calm down and say the right things. We're in a tough moment, but it's hard not to get really angry.
“Again, I'm happy with the performance, but not with the result. But I'm really angry because of the other matches.
“We have to move on. Congratulations to the boys for the performance, not the result.”
Fernandes: Why can't we do this every week?
Bruno Fernandes also had mixed feelings after the exciting 2-2 draw at Anfield. Asked about the criticism United have received recently, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “Criticized and honestly because the position in the table says it all, we have lost too many points.
“Even today we can't be happy with a draw because we need more points than them.
“It was a very good result, we could have even won the match in the end, but it is a fair result.
“I'm quite upset because if we show this today at Anfield against Liverpool, who are first in the league and probably the best team in the Premier League this season, why can't we do this every week?
“In the end I gave a good performance overall and I think we need a lot more from ourselves to get something out of this season.”
