Ruben Amorim was “really angry” after Manchester United drew 2-2 with Liverpool on Sunday and wondered why the Red Devils could not reach that level in other recent matches.
Amad Diallo scored an 80th-minute equalizer as United fought back to earn a point at Anfield after Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored to put Liverpool 2–1 ahead.
United are winless in their last ten games against Liverpool (five draws, five defeats) and have picked up just eight points from nine Premier League games under Amorim, winning twice.
However, the former Sporting CP boss oversaw a much-improved performance from his side, who also achieved a statement result last month as he fought back to beat another rival, Manchester City.
United have suffered defeats to Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle United since the Portuguese took over the reins, and he lamented their inconsistency when speaking to Sky Sports after the match.
Asked if United were disappointed not to have won the match, he said: “Yes, because the expectations were so very different to what we saw during the match.
“I think the other games make me angrier, so it's even harder to understand some things.
“This is not about the system, it is not about the technology. It's about something else and this is difficult to understand, even for the coach.
“I think it was a deserved point, but it's only one point and I think we have to be angry and disappointed, more than recently against Newcastle, or Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest – more than those days, today we have to be really disappointed .” .”
Harry Maguire missed a glorious chance to win the match in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, firing over the bar when he had a chance worth 0.28 expected goals – United's clearest of the match.
United were solid at the back and targeted Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold ruthlessly, sending 54% of their attacks down his flank, and Amorim was impressed with many aspects of their performance.
“If we play Liverpool every day, we will,” he said. “So we have to do it against every opponent and understand that we have to fight very hard to get out of this situation.
“The way we were really competitive, that's crucial for the future. I'm happy with the performance, not happy with the result, but I'm really angry because of the other games.”
