Ruben Amorim says that he is not 'crazy' to think that Manchester United can win the Premier League title next season, but knows that he will not have as long as Sir Alex Ferguson turns around the club.
Ferguson lasted six and a half years to win the title after arriving in Old Trafford in November 1986, because he brought an era of unprecedented success to United.
The club has launched Project 150 and Mission 21 to win their 21st title on the club's 150 -year anniversary in 2028. And although Amorim is in a hurry to make that happen, he admits that next season will be too early to make United Champions again.
“I understand, I'm not naive,” he said for the 196th Manchester Derby in Old Trafford on Sunday. 'I don't want to think as if we need many years to be competitive. I can't think that way. I can't get it that way. It's not in me.
“That is why I am busy putting myself off. I know that in the coming year or two years we will not be the largest competition. I know we have to do a lot of things. But I will not think and say that I need many years.
“We are in a hurry. So we suffer a lot for next year to be so much better, and that is our goal. Sometimes things can happen. So I don't want to be that guy who says here we need a lot of time. I will not be that coach.
'It is not that next year will be our goal. I am not saying that we will win the title next year, I am not crazy.
'So I know it is really difficult to do something like that in a year. We have to change many things. We change many staff, we change many things in the club.
'We do many things and set some standards. Sometimes we change players because they have not been adjusted here, sometimes they have to learn to adapt to our new standards. '
However, Amorim knows that he will not have as long as Ferguson did to make United Champions again.
“The Premier League is so different,” he added. 'I have many people who say that Sir Alex Ferguson took three or four years to win something, it is not possible nowadays because you have to speak three times and give three interviews for each match, so the pressure is completely different.
'Every team in the Premier League can win. But we are Manchester United. There are many good things, there are bad things. Regardless of the context, we have to be there with the best.
“We will have to face a lot of adversity and many large teams, more than in the past, but let's concentrate on that and try to win the next game.”
