Ruben Amorim believes that Manchester United deserves to be higher than 16th in the Premier League table – but is reluctant to say it because people would think he is 'crazy'.
United is already doomed to end in their lowest position in the Premier League era and could even end one place above the relegation zone if they do not pick up points from Friday to Chelsea and the last game of the season against Aston Villa on Old Trafford a week on Sunday.
After last weekend's defeat, Amorim admitted to West Ham that he 'embarrassed' the situation, and also expressed his concern that his players are too ready to accept the defeat.
However, he believes that the statistics – especially for the goal – show that United should win more games and go higher on the table, although making that point can leave him open for spot.
“It's hard to talk about it without looking like a crazy guy, but if you see the XG (expected goals), for example, for example in the last games, ours is bigger,” said the United Boss.
'We are so close to wolves and they score a set piece. This was the first time they reached our goal and they score and we had our chances, especially in the second half.
“I can understand that, but it's hard to talk about that at the moment. Let us concentrate in a good way and then we will prepare the future at the end of the season. '
Amorim has spoken with his players about the importance of strong completion of the Premier League season, although they have the Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday evening.
While United is preparing for Chelsea, he added: 'The best way is to face the game as we have to face the game: it is to win the game. We have to perform, we have to win points in Premier League and that is the feeling.
“We talk about that after West Ham. We must improve in the way we are confronted with competitions. Stay focused at any time of the game because we had clear situations against West Ham to score. They score one goal from the first chance of West Ham, so that these small details matter.
“The only way I know that I have to prepare a final is in the normal game that we have to play in the same way as a final.”
