Ruben Amorim will not allow his side to use youth as an excuse as he prepares to deploy stars that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe already considers 'unmarketable'.
Since investing in the club earlier this year, Ratcliffe has strived to renew United both on and off the pitch. The club's football hierarchy has been transformed with a team consisting of CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.
There was a situation going on in the summer where only three players were deemed not for sale at Old Trafford. Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund were the only stars reportedly off limits to potential suitors.
United weren't necessarily looking to place a 'for sale' notice alongside the likes of Marcus Rashord, but the striker was among a group for whom the club would have considered a worthwhile offer. Under new management it seems that youth will continue to play an important role.
The trio of Garnacho, Mainoo and Hojlund have established themselves as 'unmarketable' under Erik ten Hag and Amorim will rely on them if United are to achieve success under his leadership this season. However, young players like Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo are also given no room for excuses
“I don't want to say we need time because we are a young team,” Amorim said. “They are prepared. They are prepared to deal with the demands of playing for Manchester United. They should be because they are here.”
“We know it will take time and we will try to gain time with the matches. But we have to start from day one without fear, without thinking that they are not used to playing like this. This is not my opinion. They will they do.” start with our idea on day one, whatever the goal is.”
Amorim also discussed his priorities for his new team following his departure from Sporting CP. The 39-year-old will take charge of his first game against Ipswich Town next weekend.
The former Portuguese midfielder seems determined to give his team an identity and ensure they work together.
Amorim said: “In one word: team. The team is the most important thing for me. And when you work as a team, the talent will shine individually.
“But if I have to explain the importance of everything, it is the character, the way we fight, the way we play, and we must have an identity. When our players take the shirt, they will know that it is Manchester United is.” team.
“Everyone thinks the same: running back, playing, enjoying. This is what drives me. I can say the popular thing, which is to win. Everyone wants to win and I want to win with my players, with the fans, but with an identity and one idea , that's what I'm focused on all the time.
“We know we need time, but we have to gain time. Winning time means winning games. But the most important thing for me is identity. So from day one we start with our identity. Of course we will do that.” prepare the games, but we will focus a lot on our game model.
“How to play, how to press, these little things, little details. You can't go into every detail 100% because it will be confusing for the players. So if I have to say one thing, my main goal, my first purpose, is identity.”
