Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said that his team could be the worst Premier League side ever to win a European trophy if they lift the Europa League.
United is currently 15th in the Premier League, but gives a 3-0 lead over Athletic Bilbao in their semi-final of the Europa League with the second stage that comes with Old Trafford.
“For me, at that time and you look at the Premier League, we are the worst team because I arrived in terms of results. That is my idea. At the end of the season we can be the worst team in the Premier League history with a European title,” he told a press conference.
“So we won't change anything. We know that this season was disappointing.
“Nothing will change, at that moment I have to think a little more, but I felt that. I still have the feeling that this season was the worst in the last 50 years.”
While United has taken away every external threat of relegation, this season is currently on track to be their very first Premier League finish outside the top eight.
If they finish in the 15th or lower, it will meanwhile mark the worst finish in Manchester United, because they were banned from the top flight in the 1973-74 season.
They are on a six-match Winless Streak in the Premier League, but will qualify for the Champions League if they can win the Europa League.
“We know that we are not doing well in the Premier League. We will follow the rules and tomorrow we will come across the game as if it were 0-0,” said Alejandro Garnacho, who was sitting next to Amorim.
“If we win the Europa League, we are in the Champions League and we can face the next season with a better mentality.”
