Ancelotti expects LaLiga title race to be a close one

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has said he does not believe there will be a runaway winner of LaLiga like last season when his club won the league by 10 points.

Barcelona have led the pack since August this season, although a run of one win in seven league matches has seen them drop to third place after losing top spot to Atletico Madrid in a 2-1 home defeat last month.

Reigning champions Real Madrid, meanwhile, are one point behind Atletico, having scored forty from eighteen games. But they could take top spot for now when they travel to second-placed Valencia on Friday.

“The level of competition in LaLiga lowers the number of points you need to win the title a little bit,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“The fact that Atletico is there also creates uncertainty and I think it takes less than 90 points to become champions.”

Ancelotti also expects Barcelona to make a strong comeback despite their loss of form.

“You have a slump and then you become competitive like before. Barcelona and Atletico have the same chances to compete with us,” he added.

The Italian has guided Real Madrid to two league titles since returning to the club in 2021, but admitted he did not think it would be an easy three points against strugglers Valencia.

“Tomorrow we start a new challenge with great excitement. It will be a demanding competition… we want to start the year well,” he said.
