Carlo Ancelotti has not stopped Real Madrid from signing Trent Alexander-Arnold this month, saying he will 'wait and see' how the saga plays out.
It has been widely reported that Alexander-Arnold will sign for Madrid on a free transfer when his Liverpool contract expires this summer, but other reports this week suggest the Spanish giants want to make the move immediately.
Madrid's first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal will miss much of the rest of the season due to injury.
Liverpool will likely have to make a tough deal to lose one of their key players midway through a season in which they are in pole position to win the Premier League and still alive in every cup competition – but Ancelotti, whose team are second in LaLiga, ahead of Friday's match with Valencia, has not written off the idea.
He said: “It's difficult for me to talk about that in this context. We'll have to wait and see.
“We are focused on all these games in January and I have nothing more to say. It is not wise for me to talk about the market now.
“We'll see what will happen, but I have a great team. We have injuries and problems with them, but we are also able to overcome them.”

Liverpool take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, with Arne Slot confirming Alexander-Arnold will play for the Reds.
“I can tell you that he will play on Sunday and hopefully deliver the same performance as the past six months,” said the Dutchman.
“He played an incredible game against West Ham. I see him training hard every day.”
Alexander-Arnold is second to Mohamed Salah for assists in the Premier League for the club this season and is also second to Virgil van Dijk for forward passes.
