Ange Postecoglou’s stance on Timo Werner’s Tottenham future after Tamworth struggles

Timo Werner endured a torrid time against non-league Tamworth this weekend and Ange Postecoglou has already given his verdict on the striker's future.

The former Chelsea and RB Leipzig ace had a fruitless afternoon as Spurs needed extra time to work their way past the National League side. The Germany international frustrated the traveling supporters as he proved wasteful and failed to convert a one-on-one chance to give his side an earlier victory.

Werner saw his loan to Spurs extended in the summer after initially joining the club 12 months ago. Postecoglou's side had the chance to sign the 28-year-old for £15m but instead negotiated a new temporary spell.

The striker has not been able to convince this season and even saw one performance labeled as unacceptable by Postecoglou earlier this season. However, the Spurs boss has been unequivocal as to whether Werner will pay off his loan.

“Yes, the last thing I want at the moment is to lose another player,” Postecoglou said before the Tamworth match. “The other day after Rodrigo (Bentancur) left, we had eleven first-team players out. We are not letting anyone go at the moment”

“I think he impressed, even on the weekend he came on. He has certain qualities that can hurt any team,” he added. “You saw that he has a real change of pace this weekend. We've needed that at times in games, especially late in games.

“His attitude has never been an issue when it comes to the way he trains or the way he goes about things. I felt that day [against Rangers]Especially considering the situation we were in and him being a senior player, I thought he could have contributed more. But since then he has made an impact the way we wanted. There have certainly never been any problems with his attitude.”

Werner started up front against Tamworth as the likes of Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min took their places on the bench. The 57-time international lasted 90 minutes before being replaced, because Postecoglou was not tempted to use the stars from his bench earlier.

“No, I thought we controlled the game and had some really good chances that we should have finished,” Postecoglou explained. “I thought the goalkeeper made some really important saves for them. I thought we were doing well.

“There were a few players like Mikey [Moore]who probably played more today than I wanted, but he was really growing into the game and was having a good spell when I took him away, but he hasn't played in two months. I think the rest of the guys felt as comfortable playing as they did.”
