Ange reacts to Tottenham fans’ anger following shock home defeat by Leicester

Ange Postecoglou admitted that Tottenham were as low as they were during his time as manager and that he did not know if he would get the time to save the season.

A crushing home defeat to relegation-threatened Leicester extended his depleted Spurs side's dismal run of form to just five points from their last 11 Premier League games.

They are 15th, but live in three cups and the key players are quickly back from injuries. He emphasized that the campaign could still be a success and that the players were behind him.

But when asked if he expected to be given time to turn the tide, Postecoglou said: “Who knows, I think there's probably a fair share that will say no.

'As a manager of a football club you can be very vulnerable and isolated. I don't feel that. I feel like this group of players, not me, gives everything for the club. I have a group of employees who are really committed. That's what I concentrate on.

“I can see even in training that the guys coming back are going to give everyone a lift. There is a fantastic opportunity this season to make a real impact, and I know we can do that. But in terms of the question, is there anything I can say about that that's going to change what I need to do tomorrow morning? Nothing.'

Postecoglou's selection is plagued by injuries as a result of a packed winter programme. James Maddison was absent against Leicester, Richarlison was forced off with a problem and Pape Matar Sarr played despite an injury.

Daniel Levy, aware of the circumstances, has resisted any urge to sack another manager. Fans booed Postecoglou's decision to send off Richarlison early in the second half, but focused their anger mainly on Levy during the 2-1 defeat.

“Certainly, something I wanted to try when I took on this role was to unite the club and create an environment here where we are all focused on one thing,” Postecoglou said. 'It clearly didn't work out that way.

'It is understandable that the fans are not happy with our current situation. It is difficult to navigate through them because we need them now, especially at home to create atmosphere. Not so long ago we played Liverpool here and it was a great night.'

That was the first leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final. Tottenham led 1-0 in the second leg at Anfield on Thursday. Before then, a Europa League match at home against Elfsborg follows and a difficult trip through London to Brentford on Sunday.

Postecoglou said: 'I have had the feeling all along that the players are still very involved in what we do. That's important to me because I firmly believe in it, and I really believe that this is as low as we've been so far this year, but I still think that in the last three months we can do something very special and these players believe That. At the moment it is very difficult to imagine that.

'It doesn't really occur to me to convince people. I've been around long enough to know that some will only judge where we are today, and in some ways rightly so. It's not good enough.

'If people want to give context to that, then they can, if not, then so be it. From my point of view, I'm still very much stuck with the players just giving everything they can. They did that Thursday night, and they did that today.”
