Anthony Smith was left in tears as he spoke to Joe Rogan about a possible UFC retirement

We may have witnessed Anthony Smith grace the UFC octagon for the final time tonight, with the popular fighter putting in a valiant effort against Dominick Reyes.

Ultimately, the brawler suffered a TKO loss in the second round at the hands of 'The Dominator'.

Although the defeat was difficult to accept, Smith went into the fight with a much more devastating situation on his mind: the passing of his coach, Scott Morton.

The trainer has been with the athlete during his best moments and has become more of a family than just part of his team.

Without his mentor by his side, the 36-year-old isn't sure he wants to continue competing.

With tears streaming down his face, he told Joe Rogan, “Man, I don't even care what the fight is. I don't know how many more times I can do this. This man was my best friend, and I thought I could push him down, but I couldn't even control it when I came in here, so I don't know, I have to think for a moment, but I don't know how many times can I do this without him.

When the commentator asked if he was retiring, Smith replied: “Man, I don't know. Probably. It's been a long road, I'll think about it, but probably yes.”

Anthony Smith has had a remarkable mixed martial arts journey

Over the years, Smith has won the hearts of fans for his beautiful displays in the cage.

With an action-oriented style, the American has put together an epic resume, including back-to-back victories over Rashad Evans, Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua and Volkan Oezdemir, to earn a shot at Jon Jones for light heavyweight gold.

And while the warrior didn't win the title, he came back with a potentially career-defining victory over Alexander Gustafsson.

Therefore, if this is the end, the Texas fighter has left behind a truly brilliant legacy.
