Antoine Griezmann is confronted with a crunch summer decision about his future in Atletico Madrid while the club is waiting for an answer.
Griezmann has been supported on a large scale to stay in Madrid for the 2025/26 season, despite earlier speculation about his plans in the Spanish capital, in which both parties consistently expressed their intention to extend the link with another year.
The former French International is from the contract at the end of next season, and he still has to make a decision about an innovation, amidst almost constant rumors about an exit offer to MLS.
Griezmann has expressed the wish to play in the US before he withdrew from football, but there has been no strong move on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, with his current contract that also contains a clause until June 2027.
Atletico Madrid has outlined their wish to keep him for at least 12 months, despite the hint of Diego Simeone that he will play a reduced role, but the 34-year-old will take some time on his last phone call.
According to reports from the French outlet l'Equipe, Griezmann will wait until the end of the season before he informs Simeone of his intentions, but the club will insist an answer.
If he goes further, it removes approximately € 16 million per year from the club's salary account, but if he extends – that will contain a wage reduction for 2026/27 – with part of his deferred salary 2025/26.
Simeone and the club hierarchy want Griezmann to stay and the Veteran Vooruit can break more records next season.
With 197 club goals, in two spells in Madrid, he is already the leading goal scorer in the history of Los Rojiblancos – but he faces a challenge to break 200 for the end of May.
Griezmann is currently at 435 club performances, and he will break 450 with an extension, but must stay until 2027 to make a shot at 500 games.
