Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni casts doubt on La Finalissima clash with Spain
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has stated that he does not believe the 'Finalissima' competition will be revived next year after just one edition. The Albiceleste will face Spain in the showcase event, but it doesn't look like that will happen.
The match pitting the Copa America winners against the European Championship winners had not been played for some time, until 2022, when Italy took on Argentina. La Roja were supposed to face Lionel Messi next year, but Scaloni believes there is simply not enough time for that.
“The Finalissima next year is not easy, because Spain is playing for World Cup qualification. Because there is so much calendar, I don't see it. We'll see. We get to the game [against Peru] with the feeling that we have been together a lot, while before we saw little of them. If you add to that the matches of their clubs, which have not had a break… It is a topic that is talked about a lot. Since June we have played a lot,” he told Diario AS.
The match was originally organized by FIFA and saw Argentina beat the Italian side 3-0, but it looks like it could be a FIFA competition that concludes the event. The FIFA Club World Cup, the renewed edition featuring 32 club teams from around the world, will take place from June 14 to July 14, putting pressure on the already packed football calendar.
