Arne Slot reveals criticism from his dad despite Liverpool heroics

Arne Slot can sweep all before him with Liverpool in the Premier League and in Europe – but he still can't please his father.

Arend has been by Slot's side his entire career as a player and now a coach and is not always happy with his son's approach. While Slot wants control of games through possession, his father prefers to see Liverpool be more exciting.

Arend was critical of Liverpool's Champions League display over Lille despite them winning 2–1 to qualify for the last 16, and felt his son should have been more aggressive in his tactics.

Slot could see more trouble against Ipswich at Anfield on Saturday and says his father and the fans will have to be patient as Liverpool find a way through the low block of the Tractors boys.

“That's hard for fans and my dad is a fan too,” said the Reds head coach. “When I mention him after a game he says, 'Ah, it wasn't as exciting as Liverpool's other games' when he watched the game against Lille.

“I had to try to explain these games to him, you can easily lose if you start forcing all kinds of difficult balls, but he doesn't always agree with me.

“But as a manager I was quite happy with our performance against Lille because they were a team that was so well organized and played with so much control.

“I think there was a moment in the game that I remember Curtis [Jones] Tried to play, from the halfway line, a bit of a ball with a bit of risk and we lost it and they ran into us. So that's the risk you have when you play against a low block team. [Nottingham] Forest are probably the best in the league.

“If you play these stupid balls, which I call stupid balls, which my father would like to see play a little more, there is a risk that they create more chances.”
