Arne Slot has kept his first promise in Liverpool to give the youth the opportunity after he confirms that James McConnell has been set up for more action in the first team.
The Reds manager recently used his team depth as the team of the team is increasingly overloaded. Young talents such as Jayden Danns, Tyler Morton, Trey Nyoni and James McConnell could all be seen in Liverpool's narrow 3-2 loss for PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday evening with one younger Spring in particular.
The boss is convinced that the 20-year-old McConnell has earned his place in the senior squad of Liverpool, despite the PSV competition that only marks his third start. Slot has consistently argued for giving opportunities to young players, who reflects his early feelings in the club by saying that age is not a barrier to play when the talent is there.
In the summer, Slot said in his first press conference: “I like to see good players, when they are old or young, it doesn't really matter. It is always fun for a club and team that young players get through the ranks. So that gives Also energy in a club, so that it is not only the players who have been brought from other clubs, but also players from the Academy.
“Ultimately it is about the quality – and I did a review and they (the young players) did really well. So if they keep doing that – there will be a fair chance that they will play too.”
Initially, supporters thought that young talents such as McConnell would be sent on loan before the transfer window closes on Monday evening. Slot, however, had a change in heart, because the manager has other intentions for the promising English midfielder.
Slot revealed that he will meet the Liverpool sports director, Richard Hughes, to discuss the future of various team members – and he was mainly taken with the recent versions of McConnell.
After the tight loss of PSV on Wednesday, Slot said: “There is always a chance in life. And at the moment we have most of our players fit, so we will have this discussion tomorrow, I think between me and Richard about this Players.
“I really liked him today. Maybe the end result today would be good for him to play [elsewhere] But he is a player who has not played much for the past six or seven months because he was injured for a while. He made a big impression on me today.
“He is competitive in the training sessions we had, he is always very competitive. I am not surprised [by how he played]But you always wonder how you will respond to this level. James plays and is competitive. He definitely deserves the honor for his performance today. “
Slot will have to use the full width of his team in the coming weeks, given the continuous participation of Liverpool in all domestic and European competitions.
They have reached the semi -final of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup fourth round, the Champions League Last 16, and currently lead the Premier League – so they need all the support to keep their remarkable run. The men from Slot return to the field on Saturday afternoon and stand opposite the Vitality Stadium against high -flying Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
