Arsenal and Liverpool battle for supremacy – so how did YOUR team do in 2024?

Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City have emerged as the most dominant teams in England in 2024 when looking at the calendar year rankings for the country's top four divisions.

Mikel Arteta's Gunners top the pile for most points won per match out of the 92 clubs that make up the Premier League and EFL during the year.

Arsenal have earned 2.36 points per match in league matches, winning 26, drawing seven and losing just three of their 36 matches in 2024.

This year the Gunners finished second in the Premier League for the second season in a row.

Despite their impressive form, Arsenal will enter 2025 third in the top flight, nine points behind Liverpool.

The Reds have a narrowly lower points won per match ratio of 2.30 in 2024, as a result of playing and losing one more match than Arsenal.

Their position highlights the seamless transition between Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot in the dugout at Anfield, with Reds form very strong over the past 12 months.

Liverpool were the top scorer this calendar year with 92 goals, while Arsenal conceded the fewest with 25 goals, leading to Arteta's side having the best overall goal difference.

Reigning Premier League champions Man City are third for points per match with 2.16. Their stunning form is on track to claim a fourth title in a row and keeps them riding high despite their recent poor run.

The calendar year table, compiled by former PA head of data analysis Ben Mayhew, features Leeds United and Wrexham in the top five.

Leeds are the highest-ranked EFL side after scoring 2.13 points per game, with the club currently top of the Championship this season after losing the play-off final in May.

Wrexham's continued rise under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney is highlighted by them earning two points per game during their 45 league games.

The Red Dragons earned a second successive promotion in 2024 and currently sit high in second place in League One as they attempt to reach the Championship.

Chelsea's resurgence is highlighted by the Blues sitting seventh in the overall standings.

Tottenham and Man United's disappointing league performances this year are reflected in the duo sitting side-by-side in 45th and 46th place, having scored 1.38 points per game.

At the wrong end of the table, Wolves have recorded the lowest number of points of the teams that have played in the entire Premier League in 2024.

Wolves finished 86th out of 92 teams with 0.92 points per game, winning nine, drawing seven and losing 21 in 2024.

Southampton finished the year in 80th place overall, despite promotion to the Premier League.

The Saints' woeful form since their return to the top flight has contributed to their low position as they have managed just six points so far this campaign.

Luton, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, finished 2024 with the worst overall defensive record, with 89 goals.

The Hatters are ranked 89th overall with just 0.84 points per game, narrowly ahead of League One clubs Rotherham and Burton.

Carlisle ultimately propped up the table with a modest 0.70 points per game, having suffered 29 defeats in the 44 games played.

The record contributed to Carlisle's relegation from League One last season, one season after promotion.

Carlisle could face back-to-back relegations, with the Cumbrians currently 23rd out of 24 teams in League Two.
