Arsenal and Man Utd edge closer to Champions League qualification

Arsenal and Manchester United came closer to securing Champions League football with respective Super League victories for women on Sunday.

In the first match of the day at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium, United produced a dominant representation in a 2-0 win over Everton, while Arsenal poured the soil club Crystal Palace 4-0 aside.

The two teams are on points in the table and know that two more victories of their last four WSL matches next year will seal a place in Europe Elite competition.

United celebrated their 10th victory over Everton in their 12th WSL meeting thanks to goals by Dominique Janssen and Grace Clinton.

Everton, however, started the brighter of the two parties and thought they had continued by Katja Snoeijs, but her strike was excluded from handball.

And the good work of the Toffees was undone in the 22nd minute after the goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan spilled the free kick from Ella Toone to the path of Janssen.

Marc Skinner's side doubled their advantage two minutes after the break when Clinton sent the cross of Leah Galton in the net.

Arsenal was meanwhile helped by Beth Mead's brace when they built on their comeback from the Champions League against Real Madrid.

Mead brought the Gunners brilliant in the 14th minute and poured a left feet past the grip of Shae Yanez after he was chosen by Chloe Kelly.

Arsenal was two in the front when Alessia Russo collected Mariona Caldentey's pass before curling the ball in the left corner.

Kelly's cross to Doel was changed in her own net by Palace Captain Allyson Swaby, before Mead made her second with a good attempt from the right.

Elsewhere, Manchester City bounced back from the Champions League beaten with a victory in Brighton in the WSL, despite the late wave of the Seagulls.

The European qualification seems to be from the range of City, given the results of United and Arsenal on Sunday, but three points keep their vague hope for a late push in the top three alive.

Christmas in Casparij, the impasse broke in the 37th minute when she tapped home from Mary Fowler's Fine Cross from close range.

City thought they had put the result without a doubt when Vivianne Miedema late on her lap, but Brighton replaced Charlize Rule a nervous finish.

With four games left, the city stays in the table and they are seven points in third place in United States, with whom they are confronted in the competition on 4 May, and in the semi -final of the FA Cup for Women on 13 April.

On the other side of the table, a late goal of Jenna Clark in Liverpool Aston Villa earned a 2-1 victory that brought them four points from Palace.

Marie Hobinger converted a fine of the second half after Ceri Holland was polluted in the box by Sabrina d'Angelo before Kirsty Hanson was the same 11 minutes later.

And De Villans achieved their first victory in the sixth attempt under Natalia Arroyo late, with the low center of Ebony Salmon returned by the unfortunate Clark.

Tottenham came from behind to end that their five-match losing line in the WSL after a 1-1 draw in Leicester City in the King Power Stadium.

Both goals came after the break, with Josefine Rybrink's own goal that the foxes made, only for Drew Spence to mark her 50th appearance for Spurs with the Leveler.

Data Debrief: Mead reaches half a century

With her brace against Palace, Mead brought her 50th and 51st WSL goals for Arsenal forward, which moved her to 68 in the competition.

Only Beth England (82) and Miedema (87) have scored more than the English international since the competition was founded in 2010.

She also ended the competition with Team-High Totals for opportunities created (four) and Schoten (four).

But there was also a special moment for Villas Arroyo, who got her first victory on the board.

She had lost each of her last five WSL matches with a total score of 13-1, in which the Villans victory ensured that she would not match Emma Coates with the Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2016 in losing each of her first six games while also saw their hitchhet only one goal.
