Arsenal can beat PSG and have ‘massive opportunity’ to win UCL, says Paul Merson

Paul Merson of Sky Sports says that Arsenal Paris Saint-Germain can beat two legs in the semi-final of the Champions League and has a “mass chance” to win the tournament.

The Gunners will be confronted on Tuesday evening with the Ligue 1 side on the Emirates after a six-day break since their previous match against Crystal Palace, with the return roads the following Wednesday in the Parc des Princes.

The two parties have already confronted in Europe this season, with Arsenal won 2-0 in the Emirates in the competition phase.

But the shape of PSG has since improved, so that Liverpool and Aston Villa are defeated in the last two knockout rounds, and the side of Luis Enrique hopes to take their third scalp from the Premier League to reach the final of Munich.

Here the former Arsenal Favorite Merson offers his opinion about the coming draw and why the side of Mikel Arteta could overcome …

'Arsenal has every chance to beat PSG'

“I think Arsenal wins on two legs. We are still dragged along with the PSG of the first stage against Liverpool. When they played in the Parc des Princes, they were excellent – but they lost that game 1-0, and they hung on Anfield.

“Then they go and dominate Aston Villa and scored with the last staircase of the game, which eventually worked a priceless goal to go up 3-1. In Villa Park it came in stages where you think there is only one winner and that is Aston Villa. They had them on the rack.

“Arsenal has every chance.

'I like what happened [with Arsenal’s fixtures] Because so many teams that we see in Europe, have placed all their competitions in the Champions League and we don't do that here.

“Probably for the first time, an English team has a really nice break before they play this game, which is refreshing.”

'Arsenaal must be more consistent next season'

Arsenal Play Bournemouth in the Premier League on 3 May between their two legs against PSG, live on Saturday Night Football. There were also some questions about the Mikel Arteta team selection in Wednesday's draw against Crystal Palace …

“I personally think they should forget the Bournemouth game. They have a huge opportunity [in the Champions League] And they are not going to finish outside the top five. They will still have enough games.

“The next two games against Paris Saint-Germain are absolutely huge. They have an incredible opportunity to win in the Champions League, which they have never done before.

“If Arsenal wants to win the Premier League, and that is really the goal, this will happen every season. If you are a good team, you go deep in competitions. You need squadron players and you have to perform week in, week out.

“The worries of Mikel Arteta would be:” If we are second in the competition and we are two points behind, we can't have these kinds of versions [against Crystal Palace]. ' That is why you have to show so much respect to Man City for what they have done in recent years of consistently expressing results, winning competition titles, going deep in the Champions League, even win.

“Next season they will have to be much more consistent. It is driven away that way, but they can say that they have now put all their eggs in this Champions League.

“These opportunities do not come along too often. It is a semi -final against PSG and Arsenal has already defeated them in the group stage. It is a huge opportunity.

“I would have a few more players [against Crystal Palace]If I'm honest. As [William] Saliba would have been injured, you could have written off the Champions League. They would not have had a center half. I thought he had postponed a pretty strong team, considering how big the game is on Tuesday evening. “

'Leeds should look at Sterling'

“It's difficult. Raheem plays football all the time. In Arsenal he comes here for a match and a match there. When he comes in, it's not the entire Arsenal team.

“I don't know where he will go from here. That will be up to him, but you have to go consistently for week in, week to get a rhythm. He has arrived for games where they have made changes, so it has not been fluent. I feel for him, but I think his time will be in Arsenal.

“If I was a Leeds United, I would watch Raheem. They are a young team, they like to play offensive football and he is very good in the dressing room and a good team player.

“He has all the experience in the world, he has won Premier competitions. He would go to a huge club and the expectations are not that high. If they end up 17th in the Premier League next year, they would have been picked up trees, so that would not be a bad move.”
