Arsenal confirm appointment of Man United cult hero to Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff after departure of Carlos Cuesta

Arsenal has announced the appointment of former Manchester United -defender Gabriel Heinze to the back room staff of Mikel Arteta.

The Argentinian, who spent three seasons on the rivals of the Gunners during his playing days, replaces the outgoing Carlos Cuesta, who left to take the lead over Parma.

In a statement on Tuesday, Arsenal said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Gabriel Heinze to our coaching staff as the first team coach of men.”

A tough tackling defender during his gaming career played Heinze 83 games for the Red Devils and won the Premier League title at United in the 2006-07 campaign.

He also represented Real Madrid, Marseille and Roma, while he won 72 caps for Argentina.

Heinze and Arteta were teammates in Paris Saint-Germain in the 2001-02 season, when the latter just started setting up in senior football.

Arsenal supervised Heinze last year when Cuesta was associated with the management job in Norwich City.

During his management career, Heinze was in charge of five clubs – Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, Velez Sarsfield, Atlanta United and Newell's Old Boys.

Arteta will hope that adding further experience to his back room staff will help Arsenal in their search to win the Premier League title.

The Gunners have finished in second place in the competition for three seasons in a row.

In what is becoming an ever -drying summer, the North -London club Alredy goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has signed from Chelsea and midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

The club is also close to completing the signing of Christian Norgaard from Brentford and is in advanced conversations with Sporting Lisbon about the signing of Viktor Gyokeres.
