Arsenal confirm long-awaited €60m signing from La Liga

Arsenal has completed the signing of midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who arrives from Real Sociedad after his release clause of € 60 million has been activated.

Zubimendi, generally considered one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, attracted considerably interest in La Real in his many years. Barcelona tried to sign him in 2023 as a replacement for Sergio Busquets, while Liverpool came close to securing his services 12 months later.

On both occasions, the 26-year-old held on and he remained loyal to La Real. But he has now chosen to take the next step in his career by becoming a member of the Arsenal of Mikel Arteta. A deal has been agreed for some time, but it has only been announced because the Basque club wanted to sell the sale for the 2025-26 financial year.

That meant a nervous waiting for Arsenal fans, but that is now over. On Sunday the deal was officially made by both clubs, with La Real tribute to the Spain International, which will be “Forever Txuri-Urdin”.

Speaking with the media channels of Arsenal, Zubimendi explained his decision to exchange La Real for the Premier League side.

“This is a huge moment in my career. It is the move I was looking for and a moment that I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realize how big this club and this team are. I have set my sights on Arsenal because their playing style fits me well. They have shown their potentially and the best is still to come.”

La Real now has an extra € 60 million to spend, and the pressure is in their sports department to get the right players-especially after their disappointing season 2025-26. With regard to a replacement, people are not necessarily required, with Benat Turrientes already in the club.
