Rob Holding has ended his Crystal Palace Nightmare by completing a Deadline Day to Sheffield United.
Former Arsenal Center-Back Holding came to Palace in the summer of 2023, but was almost entirely out of the photo of the first team since Oliver Glasner took over as a manager. In 18 months in Selhurst Park he played only one Carabao Cup match, where he only made the MatchDay team twice since the Glasner arrival in January 2024.
“It has been a long day, but it's worth it, I'm happy to be here,” Holding Club Media said after he has come to the knives. He is one of the many new additions under Chris Wilder, in which Tom Cannon permanently participates in Leicester and Southampton Vooruit Ben Brereton Diaz who returns to Bramall Lane on loan.
“I had a quick word with the Gaffer and I am enthusiastic about the project he has started here, it is a good environment to be in,” the new defender added. “It's a new start, I am looking for a little consistency with games and see what happens in the second half of the season.”
Holding played more than 150 times for Arsenal after he had become with Bolton in 2016 and won the FA Cup in 2020. After having hardly played in his current parent club, he became a member of Leicester.
The 29-year-old in a MatchDay team for Palace in August, as an unused sub against West Ham. His absence has not been fully explained since then, although BBC Sport reported in the fall that a disagreement with Glasner was to blame for that match.
“Rob is currently training individually,” said Glasner at the beginning of September. “We will talk together – he knows the reason. But it is something that stays between Rob and me. Nothing public.”
It was a busy deadline day for Wilder's Side, who is in second place in the championship after 30 games. The Peruvian winger Jefferson Caceres joined Melgar, with the Nigerian younger Christian Nwachukwu completing a permanent step of the Bulgarian outfit Botev Plovdiv.
“We have been light in the central defense area since the injury of Harry Souttar, so we are delighted to add Rob, a player who has played the game at the highest level for a number of years,” said Wilder Management Manager . “It is the last remaining piece of the puzzle and although we had to wait as deadline day to get them in boxes, I think our patience is justified by getting Rob over the line.
“He played in a number of huge games during his time at Arsenal, so he will enjoy the situation he walks in. He will compete with Anel [Ahmedhodzic]Jacket [Robinson] And others, and join a team that looks much healthier than the one we had at the beginning of the window, while we look to attack the remaining part of the season. “
