Arsenal enter race for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona must continue to raise money if they want to do signing sessions in the summer, and a possible player who can be sold, is Frenkie de Jong, whose contract situation has caused a headache for the Catalans in recent years.

Earlier in the season it seemed inevitable that De Jong would go through Barcelona in the summer. However, he has reversed his fortunes in recent weeks and now he is considered a regular starter of head coach Hansi Flick. On the back of this, he now reportedly wants to expand his stay in the club.

Currently, there have been no conversations between the representatives of Sporting Director Deco and De Jong, although they are planned in the coming weeks. The hope is that an agreement will be reached before the summer, but if not, this would mean that Barcelona puts him on the market to prevent him from losing it for nothing when his current deal rises in 2026.

When De Jong is available in the summer, a switch to the Premier League seems to be his most likely destination. Liverpool has registered their interest and now TBR Football (via ED) has reported that Arsenal is also considering a chase for the Dutch midfielder during the transfer window.

Barcelona should accept a lower price if De Jong were sold in the summer, and that would be a big blow. He has been in excellent form in recent weeks and it is clear that Flick would like to retain his services, but he should also be moved if there was no hope that he signed a new contract before his current deal rises. For now it seems more likely that he will stay, but it cannot be taken for granted.
