Arsenal looked up four forward players in the transfer window in January, but chose not to bring in after a lack of quality options, while they are also wary of signing another struggling star such as Raheem Sterling.
The Gunners were connected to a number of forward players last month when they were looking for cover for the injured Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus – and made a late 40 million bid on Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins that was quickly rejected by the side of Unai Emery.
Red Bull Leipzig Forward Benjamin Sesko was another big names on their list, but it became clear that neither clubs would sell their star strikers halfway through the season.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal looked at AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich as alternatives, but thought that both would not offer the impact that Mikel Arteta was looking for to increase their titles.
Tel eventually came to Arsenal's bitter rivals Tottenham and there may be frustration that the club did not go for a backup option after he had seen Gabriel Martinelli that was injured in the Carabao Cup semi-final defeat of the club on Wednesday evening.
The report claims that the position of Arsenal was that the top players they wanted, not for clubs that demanded too much money, while other goals would only have joined in order to add depth over quality.
It says that Arsenal's interim sports director Jason Ayto, who performs for the Gunners last year, led to a more careful approach – especially after the failed Sterling loan.
The arrival of the winger on loan from Chelsea was celebrated on a large scale under the Arsenal Fanbase, but the English International did not deliver, and once assisted in just three Premier League Start and another three performances by the bank.
Sterling has also had opportunities in cup competitions, but has not given Arteta much evidence that he can contribute to the first team, apart from a few decent cameies in the Carabao Cup.
While the club made a unanimous decision not to sign a new attacker, Boss Arteta could not hide his disappointment when he interviewed about the lack of activity of the club.
“We had a clear intention that is always there to open a window to explore the opportunities to improve our team with players who can influence this,” said Arteta.
“We have not achieved it, so we are disappointed in that sense, but we are also very aware that we only want to take certain types of players with us and we have to be very disciplined by that and I think we will do that.”
