Arsenal ‘interested in Cunha’ as Arteta aims to bolster attack after Saka injury

Arsenal are reportedly interested in Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, although it appears a deal could be difficult to get done in January.

Despite Bukayo Saka's injury, it is clear that the Gunners' interest in the 25-year-old is not related to the extended period he will miss.

It is worth noting that Mikel Arteta will also be without Raheem Sterling, the Chelsea loanee who is struggling with a knee injury that further limits Arsenal's attacking options.

In fact, Arsenal's senior attacking options consist of Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

Although it is worth noting that Mikel Arteta has previously stated that his side 'will be different' as they look for options to replace Saka.

Such an option could come in January, with Matheus Cunha able to play in a number of positions on the front line.

The Brazilian forward has stood out this season, scoring ten goals in eighteen Premier League appearances and providing a further four assists.

He proved why he is so popular during Wolves' 2-0 win over Manchester United when he scored straight from a corner to open the scoring, before providing an assist for Hwang-Hee Chan to round off the scoring in stoppage time .

And according to the Telegraph, Arsenal are among the clubs expected to turn to Vitor Pereira for Cunha.

Initially loaned out by Atletico Madrid, Cunha made the permanent move to the Midlands ahead of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

In his only completed full season in England, he scored fourteen goals in all competitions and put in a number of impressive performances.

That was the case again in the first half of the current campaign despite his side's problems and he was crucial in their two victories under their new boss Perreira.

A January deal is believed to be difficult to get done as Cunha is crucial for Wolves as they look to maintain their top-flight status and would therefore be reluctant to let a key player leave in the winter window.

There could be further complications with any potential approach from Arsenal as the Brazilian has two full seasons left on his current contract, meaning they are under no pressure to sell.

Even if they can keep their top scorer in January, Wolves will be ready for bids for their main man in the coming window and will be looking to make a profit on their £40m signing in 2023.

Arsenal may have to wait until the summer for a new attacking face, as Arteta has now made it very clear that replacing Bukayo Saka will be a team effort. He told the media: “I think it's a collective thing.”

He will get his first chance to show who will replace the England winger when Arsenal host Ipswich on December 27.
