Arsenal are reportedly ready to splash the cash on Viktor Gyokeres this month, with Mikel Arteta admitting the Gunners are “actively looking” to strengthen their squad.
Arsenal's attacking options have taken a major hit in recent weeks, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Ethan Nwaneri all currently sidelined through injury. As a result, Arteta revealed that Arsenal are hoping to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.
Speaking to TNT Sports after Arsenal beat Tottenham 2-1 in the North London derby, the Spaniard said: “Yes, especially because we have lost two big players: Bukayo, who could be out for up to three months, and Gabby , who will be out.” for a long, long, long time.
“We're going to try [in this window] Certainly. We are actively looking. We'll try. Let's see what we can get.”
And according to a new report from L'Equipe, Arsenal are 'no longer reluctant to pay Gyokeres' €100m release clause. The Sporting striker has been in excellent form this season, scoring 32 goals in 30 games in all competitions.
The report notes that Arsenal are also interested in Alexander Isak and Jonathan David, but neither Newcastle nor Lille are willing to sell them in January. However, Gyokeres' situation is different because of his release clause.
The 26-year-old has been linked with moves to a number of European giants, including Manchester United and Bayern Munich, and has admitted he wants to play for “one of the best teams in Europe” soon.
When asked about his future last month, Gyokeres told Spain's Marca: “We will see. There are a lot of rumors going around, but we are in the middle of the season, there are still many months to go. We will see when the time comes what will happen.
“My goal? To play for one of the best teams in Europe. That is the goal. It has been difficult at times. I have played in the championship for many seasons. It is a very good and tough competition, but it is clear that I have always wanted to play in an important competition.”
