Arsenal expects to announce the signing of Viktor Gyokeres in the coming days after he finally agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon worth around £ 63 million – with a medical set for the weekend
Arsenal -legend Sol Campbell has warned that Viktor Gyokeres might not be enough to help the Gunners win the Premier League title and believes that they may need two top strikers to fight Liverpool.
Gyokees is about to finally seal his long -awaited movement to the Emirates after the conversations with Sporting Lisbon died for a large part of the summer.
Arsenal has agreed to pay the Portuguese club about £ 54.8 million, plus £ 8.7 million in add-ons and the Sweden International is expected to undergo a medical this weekend before he will join his teammates Tour through Singapore.
The Gunners will be hopeful that Gyokeres can dismiss silverware after five years without trophy, which were blown away by Liverpool last season without a recognized No. 9 at the front for a large part of the campaign.
But Campbell – those two Premier League titles won at Arsenal and three FA Cups – has insisted that two strikers are needed in case Gyokees are injured.
Last season Liverpool won the title with Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, while Mohamed Salah scored most of the goals of the wing.
“You need two strikers to ensure other teams,” he told the sun via Betelect. “You can't always trust just one striker as if he gets injured, the performance of the team is falling. So it's important to have a head and still have a really good backup. Sometimes they can play together, sometimes one is on the couch and the other arrives.
“It can be good to get a slightly older one who has been there, has seen and done, and can arrive if you need something to happen for 20 minutes, but they are top quality.
“If you choose the second striker well, they can come to make a difference. That's something you have to do. So if they get two strikers, they can certainly become champions.
“That is the type of player who is missing, someone who has scored 20-25 goals only in the competition. It's great to say:” He has all these goals in all these competitions, “but that is not good enough; you will not win the Premier League. You need goals to get over the line and to come up with Point differences.”
Gyokeres scored 54 goals last season in 52 games for Sporting Lisbon and is now seen as one of the best strikers in world football.
He will be the sixth signing of the club's window after Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Crithian Mosquera.
Arsenal, who has given Gyokeres the iconic number 14 shirt that Thierry Henry will be worn once, hopes to fly the player to Asia as soon as they prepare for matches against Newcastle and Tottenham.
